Acid Sulfate Soils Management for Construction Sites

This practical one day course is specifically designed for staff involved with work on construction sites where acid sulfate soils (ASS) might be encountered. It provides specific information on acid sulfate soils, their chemistry, assessment, sampling, testing, risk and compliance with relevant legislation. The implementation of an Acid Sulfate Soil Management Plan for a construction site is covered in detail, along with the NSW RTA Guidelines for Acid Sulfate Soil Management.

Course content includes:

  • Acid sulfate soils definition, chemistry, environmental location and geographic spread
  • Other ‘acidic’ soils, chemistry, environmental location and geographic spread
  • Typical acid sulfate soil textures and relationships to other soils in a subsoil profile
  • ASS Guidelines in NSW and the types of assessments undertaken
  • Environmental Impact Assessment and compliance matters
  • Field Testing of ASS (a practical exercise)
  • Further Laboratory Testing explained, POCAS, SPOCAS, CRS
  • Implementing ASS Management Plans and other issues at construction sites
  • NSW RMS Guidelines for ASS Management
  • What to do when it all goes wrong (a discussion session)
