Environmental Awareness for Underground Boring

This practical one-day course is specifically designed for Drilling Assistants, Drillers, Supervisors, Construction Engineers working on underground boring projects involved with water and sewer, gas, electricity and telecommunications infrastructure. It provides specific information on obligations by civil drilling operations in NSW environmental regulations and acts, the principles of erosion and sediment control as they relate to drilling projects and general environmental risks that may result from or to drilling. A combination of illustrated PowerPoint presentations, hands-on practical demonstrations, discussion, and practical site based activities instruct participants in how to effectively meet their operational and legislative requirements.

Course content includes:

  • The Regulatory Environment, Due Diligence and Responsibility including The Protection of the Environment Operations Act, The Water Act, The Contaminated Land Management Act, The Heritage Act, and the Threatened Species Conservation Act
  • Job Planning including Planning for Environmental and Heritage issues
  • Assessing Environmental and Heritage Risks Onsite
  • Assessing and Identification of Fill
  • Assessing and Identification of Contamination
  • Understanding Soil Erosion and Sedimentation
  • Assessing Erosion Hazards
  • Setting up the Drilling Work Area and Storage Yard
  • Erosion and Sediment Control Best Management Practices
  • Site Stabilisation and Rehabilitation
  • Handling of Spoil, Acid Sulfate Soils and Drilling Mud
  • Classification of Wastes and Triggers for Waste Classification
  • Practical Implementation of Best Management Practices and Discussion
